Beginning Genealogy
A Twelve-Hour Course
in Six Sessions


Six Sunday Afternoons, 1:30-4 p.m.
March 7, 14, and 21, April 11, 18, and 25


Where: The Minnesota Genealogical Society library, 1185 N. Concord St., South St. Paul, MN

Who should attend: People interested in beginning their family history and others who have started but want to be sure their work is on a sound footing.

Instructors:
     Jay Fonkert, CG - professional genealogy researcher, writer and educator specializing in Midwest, Dutch and English genealogy. President of the MGSociety and director of the Association of Professional Genealogists.
     Lois Mackin, Ph.D. - professional genealogical researcher and lecturer. Past officer of MGS.
     Sheila Northrop - professional genealogical researcher and lecturer. Past officer of MGS.
     John Schade - MGS librarian, specializing in Canadian, French, and American Indian genealogy. MGS director and Librarian.
     David Suddarth - specializing in Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky. MGS Secretary.

How: Classes will combine lectures, small groups, and individual work in and outside of class.

Course content: Participants will learn the five steps for beginning (and continuing) their genealogy research. Topics include inventorying personal knowledge, learning from home sources, organizing materials, planning research, locating and learning from records (census, vital records, church and cemetery records, immigration records, and naturalization records), citing sources, analyzing and correlating genealogical evidence, and applying the genealogical proof standard.

During the two-week Easter break between course segments, participants have the opportunity to work on a genealogical project with help and feedback from instructors. Christine Rose's Complete Idiot's Guide to Genealogy (second edition) is the textbook for the course.

Cost: $70, plus textbook ($12.89, available from MGS).

Technology for Genealogists
A four session course on key software programs and how to use them in the pursuit of better genealogy.

Four Wednesday evenings: March 10 and 24, April 14 and 28, 6-9 p.m.


Where: The Minnesota Genealogical Society library, 1185 N. Concord St., South St. Paul, MN

Who should attend: MGS members* with basic genealogical and computer skills. Participants should understand basic file manipulation--moving around in the file system and copying, moving, deleting, renaming and opening files. They should be able to download, save and find a file, and know how to install a new program.

Instructors:
     Tom Rice, CG - professional genealogical researcher, lecturer and author. Past director of MGS and past officer of the Irish Genealogical Society International (IGSI).
     Mary Wickersham - professional genealogical researcher and lecturer. Past officer of MGS and IGSI.

How: Classes will be a combination of lecture, demonstration and hands-on, and will include some homework assignments.

How many: This class is limited to 16 MGS or branch members!* Eight will be able to use the MGS library computers, and eight others will be able to bring their own laptops to use the MGS library's WiFi connection.

Course content: Participants will learn about file organization, computer security, freeware programs, backup and recovery, and note taking programs in the first session. Session 2 covers working with lineage databases-basic operations, demos of several programs, and learning to exchange data from a database. In session 3, participants will learn about specialty programs created for genealogy work and how they can use standard programs like word processors and spreadsheets for genealogy. In the final session, participants will learn about capturing, saving, manipulating, and cataloging digital images.

Cost: $80.00

Techniques for Writing a Family History Narrative
A two and a half hour class on writing your family history.

Saturday March 20, 9 a.m.-11:30 a.m.


Where: The Minnesota Genealogical Society library, 1185 N. Concord St., South St. Paul, MN

Who should attend: Genealogists who want to get their families more interested in the stories they've found.

Instructor:
     Linda Coffin - Linda is a professional genealogist and writer who helps clients preserve and share their stories. In 2009 Linda won second place in the Original Research Story category of the International Society of Family History Writers and Editors' national Excellence in Writing competition with her entry "Great-Uncle Andrew: The Murderer in the Family Closet."

How: Class will include lecture, discussion, and writing practice. Participants should bring laptop computers or notebooks and pens, along with genealogy data they wish to turn into a narrative.

Course content: Participants will analyze prepared samples of family history data to learn how and when to include background and context in their family history writing and to identify the topics and contextual information that might enhance the stories. They will practice writing, using their own family history information, with individual consultation from Linda.

Cost: $25 MGS and branch members, $30 non-members

The Minnesota Genealogical Society’s popular Intermediate Genealogy Course is back for a third complete round. MGS will award a Certificate of Completion to students who complete at least eight sessions, plus a capstone seminar in March 2010.

Enhance your genealogy research skills by learning how to correlate evidence from multiple sources and present clear and accurate conclusions. The instructors will use short case studies drawing on a variety of genealogical sources to illustrate good problem-solving methods.
