Danish Gazetteers and Maps

While we have grown accustomed to using Google maps to find places in our daily lives, sometimes we need to go a bit "old school" to find the towns and parishes that our ancestors hailed from. Learn what a gazetteer is, what information can be found in them, how they can help you find towns and statistical information, as well as how to locate maps unique to Danish genealogy. We will also touch upon some gazetteers and maps to help with American genealogical research.

Folklore and Family History: A Conversation for Romanian Researchers

What did your Romanian great-grandmother believe would protect her family — and where would you find it documented? Join us for an informal exploration of Romanian folk tradition, folk medicine, and superstition as genealogical evidence, using real document examples to show how cultural beliefs hide in plain sight in the records we already use. We’ll discuss the best sources for uncovering this kind of intangible family history, from the pages of America to oral history interviews. Bring your own stories, family legends, and document finds for discussion. We will also discuss the calendar of RIG meetings for 2027. (This meeting for RIG members is a follow-up to Vicki Albu's NorthStar presentation.)

NISSER AND GNOMES

Grab a mug of hot chocolate and cozy up for a presentation on Danish nisse, a small elf-like creature that has become associated with Jul. We'll discuss the Scandinavian folklore surrounding nisser and how the holiday traditions have evolved. We'll go over how to make a cute nisse craft with step-by-step instructions that you can use to create your own nisse bringing extra joy to you and your loved ones this Christmas.
