Romanian Interest Group Meeting

Please join us for our first meeting since the transition from Romanian Genealogy Society to Romanian Interest Group (RIG) of Minnesota Genealogical Society. There will not be a formal presentation this time, but we will talk about what you've been working on, what problems you are trying to solve, and what you would like to see happen with RIG in the future. We plan to engage professional speakers from Romania at some of our upcoming events, but this one is to get to know each other better. Please come prepared with your questions and recommendations for future meetings.

The Library is open from 10 am - 4 pm for research.

Join from home or in our live audience. Doors open at 9:30 for Irish tea, coffee, & treats in the Mississippi Room. You can stay to watch the webinar there or visit the Library.

Exploring your ancestors in Ireland? This session will help you get started or to renew the efforts — no experience required. You'll learn about key records to trace Irish families: civil (birth, marriage, death), church, and land records… both online and in the archives.

Jillian will outline strategies for different periods of Irish history. She will discuss tips for common research obstacles — lost records, names spelled in different ways, and sources that appear to conflict. How do you tell a good source from a shaky one? Where do you turn when you hit a dead end?

Whether you're brand new to this research or ready to take a fresh look at a stubborn mystery, you'll leave with real tools to make progress. Gather you ancestral tree and bring your questions!

Jillian is a former member of Ireland's Parliament with 18+ years working as a professional genealogist researching Ireland, the UK, all the way to Wisconsin. Based in Dublin, she is a Member of Accredited Genealogists Ireland (MAGI) and founder and managing director of Genealogy.ie.

Afterward the presentation we'll gather again to visit with other researchers, savor more Irish treats, shop reference books, and more! Please register, then join us (online or in Mendota Heights) and bring interested friends!

Join us for a fun, informative and informal night of sharing all things Danish and Danish-American genealogy and culture. Share breakthroughs, tips, brick walls, questions, general advice and overall genealogical "shop talk." Or perhaps share about a trip to Denmark, a favorite Danish recipe, or even a childhood memory of a Danish-American tradition your family celebrated. This is is an evening of open sharing, and all are welcome to attend. Whether you share or just listen, it's a great time to spend with others interested in discovering Danish roots and heritage. No need to register, simply join the Zoom meeting at the start of the event.

Danish Gazetteers and Maps

While we have grown accustomed to using Google maps to find places in our daily lives, sometimes we need to go a bit "old school" to find the towns and parishes that our ancestors hailed from. Learn what a gazetteer is, what information can be found in them, how they can help you find towns and statistical information, as well as how to locate maps unique to Danish genealogy. We will also touch upon some gazetteers and maps to help with American genealogical research.

Speaker is Heather Nelsen, Vice President and Education Programming Director of the National Danish-American Genealogical Society. No need to register, simply join the Zoom meeting at the start of the event.
