The passage of the Social Security Act of 1935 during the great depression helped to provide stability to our weakened nation. By decoding and understanding the meaning of the series of numbers and including the crossover with the military serial numbers, genealogists are better able to know their ancestors. This includes ordering the Social Security applications, researching the numidents, and understanding how delayed births played an important role into the system can help locate new information about our ancestors.

Michael L. Strauss, AG is an Accredited Genealogist and forensic investigator and qualified expert witness in court.  He lectures nationally on genealogical topics.  Strauss has a BA in History and is a United States Coast Guard veteran.  He is also a faculty member of IGHR, SLIG, and GRIP.
