The Hoffman Research Library (HRL) is located at the Minnesota Genealogy Center in Mendota Heights, Minnesota. It is a destination research facility for the Midwest region, with unique resources for studying family history. The 30,000+ items contained in the HRL collection represent the state of Minnesota; all its individual counties and larger cities; all of the fifty states of the United States plus specialized regions (e.g. New England); and a wide spectrum of nationalities and countries from around the world. The depth of coverage varies across states and countries, and many items are in their language of origin.
Volunteers are needed to staff the Minnesota Genealogy Center during public hours. Duties include opening and closing the Center, answering the phone, and helping walk-in patrons find their way around the Hoffman Research Library. New volunteers are paired with an experienced volunteer to learn the ropes. No experience is necessary. Members may access the Volunteer Registration page and view the volunteer calendar through the member login page. Or you can contact our Volunteer Coordinators for more information about duties and training.
Volunteers are also welcomed for the collection cataloging project. We are converting to the Dewey Decimal System from MGS' own numbering system to bring related resources together on the shelves. If you have cataloging experience, have taken a class in cataloging practice, or have a formal library degree, please contact the Library Manager to learn more.
Please consider regularly giving a few hours - we can't do it without you!
Donations of books and materials to the Hoffman Research Library collection are again being accepted after a long pause. Much of our backlog was processed during the pandemic hiatus, so we welcome your no longer used books for possible addition to our shelves. Our Collection Development Policy outlines what types of materials we can use. Donations may be brought to the Welcome Desk during library hours.
Thank you for your generosity. Gifts from our members enhance the collection and provide new resources for all our researchers to discover their roots.
