Romanian Interest Group (RIG)
The Romanian Interest Group (RIG) is an interest group of the Minnesota Genealogical Society (MGS), located in Mendota Heights near Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport.
We are a welcoming team of both beginning and experienced genealogists who share a common goal: researching family roots in Romania and surrounding regions of Southeastern Europe. All MGS members are invited to join RIG at no additional cost as part of their MGS membership.

Purpose of the Romanian Interest Group
The Romanian Interest Group is exclusively educational. Our mission is to:
- Foster interest in Romanian genealogy
- Encourage the exchange of knowledge about Romania, Romanian immigration, and family history research
- Support the development of Romanian genealogical resources
- Hold meetings for education, collaboration, and member engagement
- Collect and publish genealogical, biographical, and historical material related to people of Romanian descent
- Collaborate with other organizations to promote and preserve Romanian genealogy and heritage
Information about our immigration documentary, “A Thousand Dollars and Back.”
In 2014, Romanian Genealogy Society (the predecessor of MNRIG) partnered with Heritage Organization of Romanian Americans in Minnesota (HORA) to interview early Romanian immigrants to Minnesota and their children. “A Thousand Dollars and Back” is an Emmy-nominated documentary film that resulted from those interviews. Although the film focuses on Romanian immigration to Minnesota, the stories are similar to those of early immigrants throughout the United States.
