I’ve never met a family history researcher who does not like to tell their story. Do you have a story to tell about your ancestors? The one who was the founder of such and such a town, the one who served valiantly in the war, or the farmer who made it through that winter storm?

Do you think about converting your story into the written word to tell how you admire someone in your family’s past? If you do, did you know that the Minnesota Genealogical Society sponsors a writing competition each year? Learn more about the Minnesota Genealogical Society’s Writing Contest here, and share your family story.

The Minnesota Genealogical Society (MGS) requests breakout session and workshop proposals for the 2024 North Star Genealogy Conference, 25-26 October 2024.

This year’s conference theme is Unlocking the Past, Shaping the Future. The conference aims to teach participants how to access more collections and how to be more inclusive in their own genealogy endeavors. We are looking to present a variety of topics related to Midwestern genealogy resources, methodologies, case studies and DNA to expand their ways of thinking about genealogy.

Go to our North Star RFP page for more information on the conference and how you can submit a proposal for the Conference.

Our booth at the Minnesota State Fair was a huge success and we are already starting our planning for 2024. But we cannot do that without volunteers to help us design and coordinate our booth. Please contact Shannon Sharp who is our Admin Manager at the center if you would like to be a part of our planning group for 2024

The Minnesota Genealogical Society announces an additional day of open hours for the Hoffman Research Library at the Minnesota Genealogy Center. It is located in Mendota Heights, convenient to both St. Paul and Minneapolis.

Beginning Monday, May 1st, the Hoffman Research Library will add Monday to the days it is open for researchers. The hours will be from 10 AM to 4 PM.

The HRL will now be open on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays from 10AM to 4 PM. On Thursdays, it is open from 10 AM until 8 PM. Go to
https://mngs.org/Hoffman-Research-Library to learn more about the HRL.

Volunteers make this possible. New volunteers are paired with an experienced volunteer to learn the ropes, so no experience is necessary. Volunteering is fun, adds to your own knowledge, and you’ll meet new friends. Your occasional gift of time will assure that the library is kept open during all those hours.

Donations of books and materials to the Hoffman Research Library collection are again being accepted after a long  pause. Much of our backlog has been processed during the pandemic  hiatus , so we welcome your no longer used books for possible addition to our shelves. Our Collection Development Policy outlines what types of materials we can use. Donations may be brought to the welcome desk during library hours.

Thank you for your generosity. Gifts from our members enhance the collection and provide new resources for all our researchers to discover their roots.
