The Hoffman Research Library (HRL) is located at the Minnesota Genealogy Center in Mendota Heights, Minnesota. It is a destination research facility for the Midwest region, with unique resources for studying family history. The 30,000+ items contained in the HRL collection represent the state of Minnesota; all its individual counties and larger cities; all of the fifty states of the United States plus specialized regions (e.g. New England); and a wide spectrum of nationalities and countries from around the world. The depth of coverage varies across states and countries, and many items are in their language of origin. Library VolunteersVolunteers are needed to staff the Minnesota Genealogy Center during public hours. Duties include opening and closing the Center, answering the phone, and helping walk-in patrons find their way around the Hoffman Research Library. New volunteers are paired with an experienced volunteer to learn the ropes. No experience is necessary. Members may access the Volunteer Registration page and view the volunteer calendar through the member login page. Or you can contact our Volunteer Coordinators for more information about duties and training. Please consider regularly giving a few hours - we can't do it without you! DonationsDonations of books and materials to the Hoffman Research Library collection are again being accepted after a long pause. Much of our backlog was processed during the pandemic hiatus, so we welcome your no longer used books for possible addition to our shelves. Our Collection Development Policy outlines what types of materials we can use. Donations may be brought to the Welcome Desk during library hours. Thank you for your generosity. Gifts from our members enhance the collection and provide new resources for all our researchers to discover their roots. | Library hoursMondays 10 am - 4 pm Wednesdays 10 am - 4 pm Thursdays 10 am - 8 pm Saturdays 10 am - 4 pm SCHEDULED CLOSURES IN 2024 Monday, May 27 Thursday, July 4 Saturday July 6 Monday, September 2 Saturday, October 26 Thursday, November 28 Wednesday, December 25 The Library will be closed if volunteers are not available to assist researchers. We will also be closed if the Twin Cities metro area is under a Winter Storm Warning or a Particularly Dangerous Situation (PDS) Tornado Watch.
