Workshop: Technology in Genealogy Research

  • 21 May 2022
  • 9:30 AM - 12:00 PM
  • Minnesota Genealogy Center

Presented by Bert Jones, sponsored by the Minnesota Genealogical Society.

It seems we're accumulating more digital records every day, which can easily be lost in the myriads of folders on our computers. How do we keep them manageable? How do we ensure we don't lose them if the computer crashes? How can we make them easily accessible when we are on the go? In this workshop Bert will share software options, and some tips and tricks to keep your digital data organized and within reach. Some of the topics will include:
  • Organizing files/research using software tools such as Airtable, Evernote, OneNote, Asana, and the pros and cons of each
  • How editing a digital photo or scan's "metadata" can be a way to save important details of a photo or scan "with" the file itself. Information such as: date, location, persons pictured, transcribe any handwritten notes, and more.
  • Tips on using Microsoft Word or Google Docs to streamline report/book writing and make the software do some of the work for you.
  • Backup options to safeguard our data.
Bring your laptop or tablet to follow along. Basic computer skills are helpful for this session.

BONUS: Attendees of the workshop will get access to a special collection of Online Videos that coordinate with the session.
