Morning Workshop: Fundamentals of DNA for Genealogists
For the first hour of this workshop, attendees will learn where DNA is found in the cell, types of DNA tests and the companies that provide them. They will explore Ancestry ethnicity and communities and learn how to sort DNA matches with the colored dots on Ancestry and using the Leeds method. During the second hour, attendees will learn about chromosome browsers and how to use them, what the numbers on the chromosome browsers mean, what triangulation is and how to detect it. Sites we’ll explore include MyHeritage, 23andMe, FamilyTreeDNA, and LivingDNA. |

Topic: Segment Data
Participants will explore how to use DNA Painter chromosome mapping, how to add DNA match data from MyHeritage, 23andMe, FamilyTree DNA, LivingDNA, and GEDmatch, and then interpret the results.
Topic: Clusters/Tools
Attendees will learn what is needed for each of the different clustering tools (MyHeritage tools, Genetic Affairs tools, GEDmatch Tier 1) and how clustering tools help their DNA analysis.
Topic: Advanced Y-DNA Evidence (including Big Y-700)
Y-DNA evidence is incredibly powerful when used properly. Students will learn targeted testing techniques, how to interpret Y-DNA results, using (and reasons for using!) the Big Y700 test and more.
RegisteringParticipants can sign up for one or both workshops. The morning workshop will be held in the Mississippi Room at the Minnesota Genealogy Center (MGC) in Mendota Heights while the afternoon workshop will be held at the Eagan Community Center in Eagan, about 4 miles from the MGC. | Lunch is on your own!There are many food options available in Eagan and Mendota Heights or you can bring your lunch. The MGC has a small breakroom with refrigerator and microwave available for use. |
